Rick E. Childers, 63, of Manlius died at 4:29 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2019.

Rick was born March 10, 1956, in Mendota, the son of Ronald and Vannie (Swanson) Childers. He married Joanna Snell on May 12, 1979, in Tiskilwa. She survives in Manlius.

Rick graduated from Manlius High School with the Class of 1974. He earned his associate’s degree in business from Sauk Valley Community College and attended the University of Illinois.

He was a welder at TCI Manufacturing in Walnut for many years.

Rick was the mayor of Manlius for 12 years, and was on the Bureau County Board for four years. He was a member of the Manlius Lions Club, Modern Woodman, and was a Boy Scouts leader and Life Scout. He coached Little League. Rick enjoyed antiquing and yardwork, especially mowing. He loved music and playing guitar.

Rick was a sergeant E-5 in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Certificate of Achievement.

He is also survived by two children, Kristin (Matthew) Childers-Tammen of Braidwood and Ryan (Kayti) Childers of Chicago; two grandchildren, Violet Corron and Rosalee Tammen; his mother, Vannie McVey of Manlius; two brothers, Rand (Dina) Childers of Dixon andd Russell (Jenifer) Childers of Dixon; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Mike McVey.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Princeton, with military rites accorded by the Princeton Veterans Group. Visitation will be held prior to the services, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Smile Train and Make A Wish Foundation.

When I lost my job there in 81 lost touch with a lot of people I worked with but still think about all the good times we had. "I was a nurse practitioner in from 1994 to 2007 in Manlius.. Rick was the mayor and a patient of our clinic. He was a great friend and supporter. I will miss him and at some time I hope to see him in Heaven. Rick please rest in peace."
